Billboard magazine called "7 Things" "a worthy chart contender" and described it as "an odd composite, sounding decidedly country between its youth-driven headbanger choruses". The song "combines Avril Lavigne-style angst with dad Billy Ray Cyrus' country twang", according to People.com. The Village Voice also made note of the Avril comparisons. The review states that Cyrus "guns for full-on vintage-Avril territory", but felt that the song was "boring".
